About Us

The "100 Black Men" concept originated in 1963 with a group of black men in New York, who later formed the 100 Black Men of New York, Inc. These men joined together to pool their resources for the purpose of improving the quality of life for African-americans. After establishing this organization several other groups were formed throughout the country. In 1986 chapters in Los Angeles,Indianapolis, Atlanta, St Louis, Pittsburgh, Bay Area, Nassau and Sacramento formed the national organization called the 100 Black Men of America, Inc. Dr. William Hayling was the founding president. The organization has now grown to over 90 chapters and 10,000 members serving communities throughout the United States and internationally. Thomas W. Dortch currently serves as the chairman of the organization. the 100 Black Men of America's national office is located in Atlanta, Georgia on historic Auburn Avenue.

The 100 Black Men of Rome, Inc. has been a chartered of the 100 Black Men of America since 1994. The organization currently has 38 active members. Mr. Gary Byrd was the founder of the Rome chapter. Dr. Joshua Murfree was this chapter's first elected president. Past presidents have includes, Henry "Hank" Richardson, Charles Oliver, Curtis Adams.and Larry G Morrow,Sr. Greg Shropshire is the organization's current president. The membership consist of laborers, entrepreneurs, educators, managers and clergymen. The Local chapter works in collaboration with several groups and organizations to provide resources toward building a better community. The chapter is a member of the Rome Chamber of Commerce, Rome/Floyd Communities in School and Rome/ Floyd Literacy initiative.

The 100 Black Men of Rome, Inc. seeks to serve as a beacon of leadership by utilizing our diverse talents to create an environment where our children are motivated to achieve and to empower our people to become self-sufficient shareholders in the economic and social fabric of the communities we serve.

The 100 Black Men of Rome, Inc. is committed to the intellectual development of youth and the economic empowerment of the African-American community based upon the following precepts: respect for family, spirituality, justice and integrity.
