What is a Domain Name
A Domain Name is a string of alpha-numeric characters that correspond to a specific IP address in a DNS server.
Instead of typing 199.0.0.2 in your internet browser to access your site, you would type in www.mysite.com
to reach your site.

What Is A Domain Name Server (DNS) And How Does It Work
Domain Name Servers (DNS) are the Internet's equivalent of a phone book. They maintain a directory of domain names and translate them to Internet Protocol (IP) addresses.
This is necessary because, although domain names are easy for people to remember, computers or machines, access Web sites based on IP addresses.
Information from all the domain name servers across the Internet are gathered together and housed at the Central Registry. Host companies and Internet Service Providers interact with the Central Registry on a regular schedule to get updated DNS information.
When you type in a Web site address, e.g., www.yoursite.com, your Internet Service Provider views the DNS associated with the domain name, translates it into a machine friendly IP address (for example 216.168.0.21 is the IP for yoursite.com) and directs your Internet connection to the correct Web site.
After you register a new domain name or when you update the DNS servers on your domain name, it usually takes about 24-48 hours for the domain name servers world-wide to be updated and able to access the information. This 48-hour period is referred to as propagation.
|
What Is Propagation
Registration of a new domain name or changes to the DNS servers for an existing domain name requires an update to the information stored in name servers across the Internet. This update process is called propagation and occurs when domain name servers (DNS) on the Internet world-wide update their records (DNS tables) to reflect any updates to domain names and IP addresses. For more information on DNS, review the article, What Is A Domain Name Server (DNS) And How Does It Work.
The propagation process must be completed for your domain name to be recognized throughout the Internet.
DNS propagation takes approximately 24-48 hours.

The Difference Between Transferring Hosting And Transferring A Domain Name Registration
Transferring your hosting is changing the domain name servers (DNS) where your domain name is housed. It is most often done when you switch your Web site to a new hosting company or Internet Service Provider.
Transferring your domain name registration is when you move your domain name from one registrar to another.
Some Internet Service Providers (ISP) or hosting companies may tell you that you have to transfer registrars in order to change the DNS information and utilize their services. This is not true – you can retain 2h Media Solutions as your registrar while using domain name servers from any hosting or ISP company.
